The Gifts
MYRRH — JESUS OUR SACRIFICE

Scripture Reading:

Genesis 3:15 (NKJV) —
“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise His heel.”

Devotional Thought:

Myrrh is the gift that catches your breath. It’s not warm or festive. It’s not something you hand a new mother with a smile.

Myrrh was used for burial.
It smelled like death.

And yet God allowed it to be placed before His newborn Son.
Why? Because even at His birth, Jesus’ mission was clear.

Prophecies of a Suffering Savior

The first promise in Scripture foretold a wounded Deliverer:
Genesis 3:15 (NKJV) —
“…He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.”

Isaiah prophesied His rejection and suffering:
Isaiah 53:5 (NKJV) —
“He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities…”

Jeremiah foretold the weeping connected to His arrival:
Jeremiah 31:15 (NKJV) —
“A voice was heard in Ramah… Rachel weeping for her children…”
(Fulfilled in Herod’s massacre near Bethlehem.)
Every prophecy pointed to a Savior whose road would lead to a cross.
So even at the manger, myrrh whispered the Gospel:

Jesus was born to die so we could live.
But don’t let that truth make you somber—let it make you grateful.
Let it fill your heart with awe.
Let it remind you that God’s love is not sentimental; it is sacrificial and fierce.
This week, pause long enough to feel the weight and wonder of this truth:
Jesus came knowing your name.
He came knowing the cost.
And He came anyway.

Reflection Questions:

1. What does it mean to me personally that Jesus was born to die for my sins?
2. Where do I see God turning broken places in my life into testimonies of grace?
3. How can I live with deeper gratitude for the sacrifice Jesus made?

Closing Prayer:

Jesus, thank You for coming into this world with a mission—to save me. Thank You for
choosing the cross, for defeating sin, and for offering me eternal life. Help me to live with
grateful obedience, remembering the price You paid. Amen
